What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom used to mean something very different to me.
At one point in my life, I thought freedom was about ease. Stability. Having everything go according to plan.
Then life happened.
Loss happened.
Grief happened.
And suddenly, freedom became something much deeper.
Freedom became waking up in the morning and choosing to live, even when my heart was broken.
Freedom became laughing again without feeling guilty for it.
Freedom became taking my children on holiday and genuinely smiling, not because life was perfect, but because we survived what tried to destroy us.
People often think freedom is loud.
But sometimes freedom is quiet.
It is the ability to breathe again after months of surviving.
It is peace returning to your mind.
It is no longer needing to explain your healing to people who only understood your pain.
For me, freedom is emotional.
It is being free from the opinions of people who never carried my burden.
Free from the pressure to remain broken just because I experienced loss.
Free from guilt.
Free from fear.
And most importantly, free enough to love, laugh, dream and live again.
I think one of the hardest things after grief is allowing yourself to experience joy again.
The world almost expects widows, grieving mothers and broken people to remain emotionally frozen forever. But healing requires permission. Permission to smile. Permission to grow. Permission to become.
That is freedom too.
These days, freedom looks like:
• peaceful mornings
• hearing my children laugh
• walking with God
• protecting my peace
• setting boundaries without guilt
• and no longer shrinking myself to make others comfortable
Freedom is finally understanding that surviving something painful does not disqualify you from living something beautiful.
And maybe that is why I speak so openly now.
Because somewhere, someone is still emotionally trapped in survival mode. Someone is still waiting for permission to live again after heartbreak, disappointment, divorce, grief or loss.
So let this be your reminder:
You are allowed to heal.
You are allowed to start over.
You are allowed to smile again.
You are allowed to become more than what happened to you.
That, to me, is freedom 🤍
