In 2023, my world shifted dramatically. My life took a drastic turn. After years of dedicating myself to a thriving career in HR, I made the bold decision to step away from my 9-to-5. It wasn’t an easy choice, especially as a mum of three 😑 however I had the best support from my beloved husband. BUT Who would have thought that he would pass away just two months after.
Newly widowed and navigating life after the unimaginable loss of my husband has been incredibly difficult. But something in me knew it was time to pause, reflect, and rethink my path.
Stepping away from my job was not just about work!! it was about rediscovering who I am outside the labels of a “career woman” or “senior manager.” For the longest time, my identity and sense of security were tied to my professional success and what I could accomplish professionally. When I let go of that, it felt like free-falling, it felt like a leap into the unknown, but it also unlocked possibilities I hadn’t considered before and opened my eyes to new possibilities.
Losing my husband after this big decision also makes me wonder if God was preparing me for the worst? Did God know I wouldn’t be able to handle a 9 to 5 while grieving and being there for our 3 young children? Was this all part of God’s plans? Is it all in my head? There are some questions I may never get the answers to but with how God has looked after me and my children whilst not having a steady income or no income at all still baffles me till today. But knowing God (even though we have had a few back and forth) He never leaves his children forsaken. My job is to accept Gods blessings and not question how he is doing it or how he will do it.
Ok back to leaving my job and maybe I should add with no urge to return to a 9/5. The decision has allowed or should I say is allowing me to explore my passions: writing, supporting others through their grief journeys, and encouraging wellness through fitness. It also gave me clarity about what truly matters in life!! My faith, my children, and building a legacy that extends beyond a job title.
Yes, there are moments of doubt. There are days I wondered if I had made a mistake, especially with financial pressures and uncertainty. But through it all, I’ve come to understand that setbacks aren’t failures!! They’re opportunities to gain perspective and pivot toward what aligns with your purpose.
I am still figuring it out. I am still asking questions. There are some days I send out my CV because the flesh in me still try to process how I have been surviving and LIVING with salaried income but the rejections sometimes help me with my doubts. I know right…. I’m in a weird space. The things of God may never be understood by Man and I’m learning to TRUST in God completely.
If you’re facing a tough decision or feeling lost after a setback, I want you to know that it’s not the end. Be kind to yourself, embrace the process, and lean into the new chapters waiting to unfold. Most importantly, Trust in God. I know it’s hard when something this tragic happens. God also knows and gives us grace to throw in our emotions. I now believe that God feels our pain and carry’s our burden when they are too heavy for us.
Sometimes, losing what feels secure is the only way to find the life you’re meant to live. The future is still being written……! step forward boldly (Note to Self)
