What Fears Have You Overcome and How?

What fears have you overcome and how?

If you had asked me this question a few years ago, I would have probably smiled politely and said something about fear of failure or marrying the wrong person. But life has a way of digging deep, unearthing fears you never knew existed until you have no choice but to face them.

I’ve had to stare hard at some of the most paralysing fears in my life!!! fears I never asked for and would never wish on anyone.

The fear of losing everything.

The fear of being alone.

The fear of my children growing up without their father.

The fear of never smiling again.

The fear that grief would swallow me whole.

When I lost my husband, the man who loved me so beautifully and saw me so clearly, it felt like the ground beneath me cracked open. There were days I couldn’t breathe, nights I couldn’t sleep, and moments I questioned everything….even God. I feared I would never find my way back to myself. I feared I would never be able to mother well, love again, or simply enjoy life.

But here’s the truth I’ve learnt; Fear doesn’t always disappear. Sometimes, you move forward with it still whispering in your ear but you move anyway.

And that’s how I’ve overcome fear:

1. Through God’s word

Scriptures became oxygen. I anchored my broken heart in promises that didn’t shift, even when everything around me did. Verses like “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Psalm 56:3) and “Fear not, for I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10) held me together when I couldn’t hold myself.

2. Through walking…..literally.

There were days when walking was all I could do. Step by step, I released pain, confusion, and sorrow. That’s why I always say, Walking Away the Grief wasn’t just a title, it was a lifeline.

3. Through love 💕 first God’s love, then self-love.

Learning to love myself again after loss was hard. I had to believe I was still worthy of joy, companionship, softness, and dreams. I had to remember that I’m not just a widow!! I’m still a woman with passion, purpose, and so much love to give🙌🏾

4. Through vulnerability.

I learned to say, “I’m not okay.” To stop pretending. To cry in front of my children, and then laugh with them 10 minutes later. I shared my pain in whispers, in prayers, and eventually, through this blog. And healing came slowly, quietly, but surely.

5. Through community.

God sent people. Unexpected angels who prayed, gave, checked in, and just sat with me in silence. You can’t heal alone. You were never meant to.

I still have fears 🙀I’m human. I still wrestle with the unknown. But I’m no longer paralysed by them. I’ve learned that courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s choosing to move forward despite it.

And maybe, just maybe, the fears we overcome become the stories we tell to help someone else keep going.

So I ask you today, gently and sincerely:

What fears have you overcome ……and how?

You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just start where you are. That’s where the healing begins.

With love,

Doris 💛

  1. If you asked me a few years ago, I might’ve said fear of failure or choosing the wrong partner. But life digs deeper, revealing fears I never knew—like the fear of losing everything. Facing those fears wasn’t easy, but it changed me.
